A phone connected to mobile data, with a separate route for bank verification messages.

Separate mobile data from verification messages

A travel data plan can provide internet access without giving you a phone number or text messaging. Your wallet or bank may still require access to the number already registered with it.

Before departure, check how your home SIM handles incoming messages abroad and how your travel SIM or eSIM provides data. Avoid making assumptions based only on the number of gigabytes advertised.

Check the phone and plan together

Confirm that your phone supports the chosen eSIM or SIM and any required network unlocking. Read the plan’s activation instructions, coverage and validity window before purchase.

If you use two lines, review which one supplies mobile data and whether data roaming is required for that particular plan. Keep the issuer’s instructions available; settings vary by device and provider.

Prepare for the first hour after landing

Save the address of your accommodation and essential booking details before travelling. Have a charging option and know how you will get connected at arrival.

When a payment stalls, check connectivity before treating it as a card refusal. A loading screen does not tell you whether a transaction has completed, so inspect its status in the wallet before retrying.

Choose connectivity for your itinerary

Compare the destinations, duration, tethering rules and support offered by the plan you are considering. This guide does not promise that every app or service is reachable on every connection.

The optional Trip.com eSIM link is an affiliate link and may earn us a commission. Check the current plan details yourself. Keeping authentication reachable matters more than choosing a provider because it appears in a payment guide.
